Christian Kirchner Home

The Christian Kirchner home was built in 1867 and was the first frame dwelling in Peterson and Clay County.  It is standing on the original site and only minor structural changes have been made.  With the exception of a few articles, all the pieces in the house have been donated to the Heritage organization by interested persons and will remain as permanent furnishings, with several different displays each year.  The property was given to the City of Peterson in 1971 by late John, Elmer and Jacob Kirchner of Fort Dodge, grandson of the original owner.

Peterson Heritage members have restored and renovated the home, which is open during the bi-annual Heritage Tour (even numbered years), by appointment, and for tours. Free-will donations are gratefully accepted.

The home has two-flours. There are five rooms downstairs and three rooms plus a hall upstairs. The home is furnished with family artifacts and donated period pieces, and represents a typical family farm home of the era. The first church services and Sunday school for area people were held in this home.
